Why Locals Love Mamma Bette
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Mamma Bette brings an authentic slice of Italy to Brazil with its exceptional pizza and Italian cuisine. This cozy yet lively pizza restaurant has quickly become a beloved spot for locals and travelers craving more than just standard fare—it’s a place where warmth, flavor, and impeccable service converge.
Step inside Mamma Bette, and you’ll immediately feel the inviting atmosphere that balances casual comfort with genuine Italian charm. The aromas wafting from the kitchen are intoxicating—freshly baked dough, melted cheese, and fragrant herbs teasing your senses even before your first bite. Among the standouts is the pepperoni Gorgonzola pizza, celebrated by guests like Amanda Nielson for its perfect blend of spicy, creamy, and savory notes. Whether you lean towards classic choices like Margherita or prefer adventurous twists with rich cheeses and fresh vegetables, every pizza bursts with bold, authentic flavors thanks to high-quality ingredients and expert craftsmanship.
But Mamma Bette is more than just fantastic food. The service here creates a memorable dining experience that stays with you long after you leave. John Larsen’s praise for his waiter, Joao—described as warm, kind, and refreshingly genuine—captures the spirit of this place perfectly. Attentive staff like Naldo, as noted by N R S, elevate the meal with promptness and care that feel both professional and heartfelt, making you feel truly valued as a guest.
Even the details reflect Mamma Bette’s dedication to quality: the spotless bathrooms, the generous seating accommodating large groups effortlessly, and the availability of English menus ensure everyone feels at ease. The menu extends beyond pizza with delicious appetizers such as an eggplant and cheese dish praised by Josué Martinez Oliva, and the well-curated wine selection pairs beautifully with every meal, adding an extra layer of indulgence.
While some diners seeking non-Italian options have found the menu streamlined, the core offerings remain satisfying and thoughtfully prepared, making Mamma Bette a go-to destination for a genuine and hearty Italian meal in Rio. Whether you’re escaping the Brazilian heat or simply craving great food coupled with warm hospitality, this spot delivers consistently.
In essence, Mamma Bette is more than a restaurant; it’s a heartfelt homage to Italian culinary traditions infused with the easy-going, friendly vibe of Copacabana. It’s a place where you don’t just eat—you connect, savor, and create memories over every slice. For that unforgettable Italian pizza experience in Rio, Mamma Bette earns more than just a recommendation—it deserves a standing invitation on your must-visit list.

This place is great! The pizza was so good, and everyone is so cool. Definitely reminds me of my bartending/serving days and being in the service industry with some cool people/kind souls. We really loved everything about it. Highly recommend. Our waiter, Joao was so cool, helpful, kind, warm, and just great. So glad we picked this place. We will definitely remember it!

We came here specifically for the non-Italian options because we were desperate for air conditioning to escape the heat. Note that many non-pizza/pasta items shown in older photos are no longer on the menu. We ordered the steak and the chicken salad. The food itself was actually good—not amazing, but satisfying. However, the service was bizarre. Our waiter started taking our order, then just walked away mid-sentence. When the food finally arrived, there was a long gap between dishes. The steak came out first, and then the salad arrived... in a takeaway bag. We told them we were dining in, so the waitress took it out of the bag and tried to serve it to us in the plastic takeaway container! I had to ask her to actually put it on a plate, which took another 8 minutes. It’s a nice enough place, but the service was a total mess. Maybe we were just cranky from the heat, but it was a very strange experience.

So yummy and the service and atmosphere is so great. The bathroom was so clean and there is plenty of seating. We had a larger group and they handles us with ease. They even serve you your first slice of pizza. They offer English menus as well. I really loved the pepperoni Gorgonzola pizza we got.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone traveling/living here. Top notch service, waiters are attentive and always on point. Everything super clean and you dont have to wait long for your food. Naldo was EXCELLENT with his service, super kind and caring. Will definitely be back next time I come to Rio. This place deserves a Michelin star!

Excellent place! The food was very good. We ordered an eggplant appetizer with cheese that was amazing, and a Margherita pizza that was also really good. The caipirinhas were tasty and strong. We ordered a bottle of wine, they have a great selection and very good options. The staff was very attentive and friendly. I highly recommend this place

We visited twice during our trip to Rio (mainly because I had FOMO seeing the table next to us order on our first visit!) and would 100% recommend it. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating — with cosy pizza restaurant vibes inside and live music outside. The team was lovely, quick, and professional. When it started raining during our meal outdoors, they swooped in to save our food (and us!) and quickly moved everyone inside. On our first visit, we shared a large half-and-half pizza: pepperoni on one side and Parma ham with rocket on the other. The pepperoni was a little too meaty for me (though my partner loved it), and the Parma ham half had a bit too much rocket. On our second visit, we went for the pepperoni and the deluxe margherita, which went down a treat. If you’re after a break from local cuisine, this is definitely one to try.

Went there for a late lunch and unfortunately couldn't get the pizza because it isn't served until 4 pm. The Caeser salad was excellent with almost too much dressing. The lasagna was tasty and the Parmesan crusted chicken and Parmesan risotto was delicious. Overall great place to have a meal with fast and friendly service.
